About the Nepal Geographical Society

Established in 1961 (BS 2018), the Nepal Geographical Society (NGS) is one of Nepal’s oldest
professional organizations dedicated to advancing geographical knowledge, research, and professional
practice. For more than six decades, NGS has provided a platform for geographers, researchers,
academics, practitioners, and students to share knowledge, foster collaboration, and engage in dialogue
on contemporary geographical issues, particularly those affecting Nepal and the wider Himalayan region.
Our Key Highlights:
1. More than 60 Years of Service
Since 1961, NGS has contributed to the advancement of geographical scholarship and professional
practice in Nepal.
2. More than 300 Life Members
A growing community of national and international professional geographers committed to advancing
geographical knowledge.
3. The Himalayan Review: Academic Publication
The peer-reviewed journal of NGS, first published in 1968, with 45 volumes published by 2025.
4. Global & Regional Collaboration
NGS is a member of the Asian Geographical Association (AGA) and collaborates with the International
Geographical Union (IGU) and other national and international organizations.
5. NGS Webinar Series: Knowledge Sharing Virtual Platform
Launched in 2022, the monthly webinar series has become a virtual platform for knowledge sharing and
scholarly dialogue. 23 episodes were successfully organized by 2025, featuring national and international
scholars.
6. Academic Excellence
NGS recognizes outstanding students through the Jagat Bahadur Singh Budhathoki Award and Mathura
Prasad Maskey Award, including a gold medal, cash prize, and certificate.

understand Nepal’s changing environmental, social, economic, and development landscape. Its members
have contributed significantly to national planning, policy formulation, territorial and administrative
restructuring, and development initiatives.

geographers, promoting evidence-based policy dialogue, and positioning geography as a vital discipline
